Who can apply for Belgian nationality?

Obtaining nationality by declaration is the most common acquisition method for adults, there are 5 main candidate profiles:

  • You were born in Belgium and have resided there legally since birth
  • You have resided in Belgium for at least 5 years, and can prove your economic, social, and linguistic integration
  • You are married to a Belgian citizen or parent of a minor Belgian child, and you have been living in Belgium for at least 5 years
  • You have resided in Belgium for 5 years and are retired, disabled, or have a recognized disability
  • You have lived in Belgium for more than 10 years, and demonstrate active participation in the host society

Naturalization remains possible, but only in exceptional cases for persons who have contributed to Belgium’s international influence.
