Sommaire

Definition of an au pair stay

An au pair is a person temporarily hosted by a Belgian family in exchange for:

  • Light household tasks
  • Accommodation and meals
  • A cultural and linguistic immersion experience

Mandatory authorisations

Before the stay begins, two documents are mandatory:

  • An employment authorisation (to be requested by the host family)
  • A work permit (to be obtained by the au pair)

Good to know No placement may begin without these prior authorisations.

Duration of the placement

  • The placement is limited to a maximum of 1 year
  • It may be renewed once only, without exceeding this total duration of one year

Gateway to a student visa

Au pair status can serve as a stepping stone towards a student visa, in particular for:

  • Pursuing higher education in Belgium
  • Facilitating a change of status without leaving the territory

A comprehensive guide on the student visa is available after consultation.
