The private income earner visa: what you need to know
A procedure not specifically governed by law, but possible
There is no dedicated legal procedure for a « private income earner visa » in Belgium.
However, a residence application based on personal financial resources is perfectly feasible if you:
- Do not engage in any gainful activity in Belgium
- Have sufficient, regular and stable income
- Are able to demonstrate your integration in the country
Who is this type of visa for?
This visa generally concerns the following profiles:
- Persons living off their rental income, dividends, annuities or pensions
- Private investors wishing to acquire real estate without engaging in professional activity
- Retirees with a pension or personal wealth transferable to Belgium
What are the basic conditions for submitting your application?
Financial resources
You must prove that you have:
- Stable and regular annuities (e.g. rent, pension, dividends)
- A recommended minimum income of EUR 2,000/month net, transferable to Belgium
- A funded current account (immediately available funds)
The higher your resources, the greater your chances of obtaining a favourable response.
Prohibition on gainful activity
A private income earner visa does not grant the right to work. Any professional or entrepreneurial activity is strictly prohibited under this status.
Recommended real estate investment
A real estate investment without a mortgage significantly strengthens your application.
We work with a partner real estate agency, a notary, a broker and a tax advisor to support you in this area.
References and ties to Belgium
The administration will take into account:
- Your personal or professional ties to Belgium
- The reasons for choosing Belgium (as opposed to another European country)
- Testimonials from people in Belgium (letters from relatives, professionals, etc.)
Health insurance
It is mandatory to take out health insurance covering medical care for the entire duration of the stay.
Processing times
According to the Immigration Office, your application will be processed within 3 to 6 months after submission at the Belgian consulate in your country of residence.
This timeframe depends on:
- The quality of the supporting documents
- The complexity of the file
- Additional checks required by the administration
